Killer Cover Letters
Why a cover letter and when to use it.
So many job candidates don't see the importance of a cover letter.
Cover letters introduce the reader to the candidate and provide
a quick summary of what you, the candidate, are looking for in the
job market. Cover letters also introduce the resume to the potential
employers as the candidate is not there to present himself/herself
in person. A cover letter gives you the chance to put your name
before the potential employer "twice". I write "killer"
cover letters that zero in on your target.
Our letters can easily be customized in several ways: to a
general search when you don't know if there are any available
openings within a company; to an industry specific search when there
are multiple openings or you are trying to sell yourself to "create"
a job; and to a targeted search when you know the open position
title.
The "rule of thumb" on cover letters says the cover letter
can be longer, even as long as two pages, under certain circumstances.
Normally, we stick to one page. If you deliver your resume by hand,
there is no real need for a cover letter as long as you have discussed
your needs with a decision maker who expects to receive your resume.
Try to direct your resume to a hiring manager or to a department
head-they are usually the real decision makers.
I also write thank you letters which should be sent immediately
after an interview and reminder letters for when you have not received
a response to your interview. Click on Services/Prices to find out
more about these letters.
